Isandla Institute is a public interest development think-tank with a primary focus on fostering just, equitable and democratic urban settlements.
The organisation was established in 1999 with the aim of engaging key decision makers in government, build environment practitioners including architects, planners and civil society organisations to find innovative ways of advancing urban development and strengthening the developmental local state.
Isandla Institute advances its purpose through various thematic entry points, including: poverty reduction, developmental local government, sustainable local economic development, culture and development, HIV/AIDS, land and integration, and determined civil society action. Due to the holistic development approach of the organisation, specific programmes and projects tend to operate at the interface of these thematic areas and are tailor-made to local specificities.
